Charles E. King

Charles E. King

Charles E. King served honorably in the World War II Navy Armed Guard Service.
Charles served aboard the SS THOMAS L. HARTLEY from June 1942 to January 1943
and on the SS PAN CAROLINA from July 1943 to January 1944. Charles was a good
sailor, a reliable member of the team and a wonderful father according to his
daughter, Shirley King Lloyd. Charles has also been a consistent supporter of
the World War II Navy Armed Guard Association, according to Chairman Charles
Lloyd. He worked after World War II “mothballing” the fleet in Orange, TX. He
was also an instructor at the Navy Gun Docks in New Orleans from January 1944
to his discharge in October 1945. He was a Gunner’s Mate 1st class when he was
discharged. He later moved to Victoria, TX, where he retired from DuPont after
35 years. He would love to hear from others via email to daughter, Shirley King
Lloyd (shirley@lloydhaus.com).

Quote from the book Liberty Ships, the Ugly Ducklings of World War II,
by John Gorley Bunker

Getting to Russia was only part of the job. Some ships spent so much time
waiting to unload in the crowded ports that the crews began to feel like
Soviet citizens. The crew of the YAKA, at Murmansk, sweated out 156 air
raids while off-loading cargo. The IRONCLAD ran aground at Archangel and
was given to the Russians. The Libertys THOMAS L. HARTLEY, FRANCIS SCOTT
KEY, and ISRAEL PUTNAM spent nearly eight months unloading, and endured
many air attacks. HARTLEY was credited with three kills. The JOHN LAFARGE
and JOHN IRELAND also shot down enemy bombers. Men learned enough Russian
to ask, “How about the next dance?” or “Do you have a husband?” They
hitchhiked around the forbidding countryside and some managed to get as
far as 200 miles inland before being escorted back to their ships.
Finally, in September 1943, the five Libertys steamed down Kola Strait
and headed for home.
