Edward G. Almeida – Naval Armed Guard Tribute
Edward G. Almeida served honorably in the Naval Armed Guard. Edward was born a little earlier than the average Armed Guard (16 June 1915), so he was a little more seasoned, a little wiser, a good man to have aboard your ship, someone you could count on in case of trouble.
Edward proved he could be counted on while on board ship in Convoy UGS-40, on May 11, 1944. They were attacked by German JU-88s in the Mediterranean, and Edward put some 20MM rounds in the tail of one JU-88 and saw a puff of smoke come from the tail. One plane came so close to the ship they felt they could have leaped in the air and touched a wing.
In case you want to get in touch with Edward, send an email to his son at M.ALMEIDA@COMCAST.NET.
Edward lives in Brockton, Massachusetts.
