My father, George Lemak passed away this week on May 22nd, 2004. This was an appropriate Day for him to leave us as May 22nd is recognized as Maritime Day, and George spent half his life at sea. George was an honorable man who served in The Armed Guard as a Gunner's Mate, aboard the SS Lot Whitcomb, The SS Jacob Thompson, the SS Robert L. Vann, which was sunk by enemy action just outside the English Channel on March 1st 1945. After 16 days of survivor leave George returned to duty on the SS John W Powell where he served until he was honorably discharged. After the war George worked as an AB (Able Bodied Seaman)out of the San Francisco SUP Union Hall, primarily for Standard Oil. During his career as a merchant seaman George married and raised five children. He is survived by Alice, his wife of 52 years, his five children, and 13 grandchildren, all of whom miss him dearly. If anyone out there has any information or stories about The Robert L. Vann and her crew or any of the other Liberty Ships George served on I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you. I'd also appreciate hearing from any of George's former shipmates from Standard Oil. For Standard Oil, George sailed on the Washington Standard,The California Standard, The R.C.
