Honoring James Herbert Bowen

James Herbert Bowen was born January 2, 1924, and is deceased.

He served honorably in the World War II Navy Armed Guard Service. He
accepted all assignments, regardless of the danger involved, and
performed all duties in an exemplary manner. He was well liked by his
shipmates and by his gunnery officers. James was assigned as follows:

US Navy Training Station, Great Lakes, Illinois
Armed Guard School, Gulfport, Mississippi
US Navy Armed Guard Center, 1st Ave and 52nd St, Brooklyn, New York
SS Joseph Rodman Drake – Gunner
SS Anson P.K. Safford – Gunner
SS Swift Arrow – Gunner
Armed Guard Gunnery School, Camp Shelton, Virginia
SS Alcoa Scout – Gunner
NAS, Alameda, California

James H Bowen died from cancer August 3, 1984. He is survived by his wife
Edythe, and three children, Thelma J New, Keith W and Colleen M Coil/Bowen.
Two other sons, William P, a U.S. Navy veteran who died June 16, 2006, and
Carl A, who served with the U.S. Army in Viet Nam and who died November 18,
2009, are now united with their father.
